Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘦𑘮𑘰𑘐 (mahāga), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀳𑀕𑁆𑀖 (mahaggha), from Sanskrit महार्घ (mahārgha). Related to महागडे (mahāgḍe) with the Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) extension. Compare Konkani म्हारग (mhārag), Gujarati મોંઘું (moṅghũ), Hindustani महंगा (mahaṅgā) / مَہَنْگَا (mahaṅgā), Assamese মহঙা (mohoṅa).
