From Proto-Indo-Aryan *máźʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máĵʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂-os ~ *méǵh₂-es-, from *méǵh₂s (“big, great”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬵 (mazah, “word”), Ancient Greek μέγας (mégas), Latin magnus.
