Etymology
From Old Marathi 𑘥𑘹𑘘𑘜𑘹 (bheṭaṇe), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝𑁆- (*bheṭṭ-, “to meet”) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀺𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (bhiṭṭijjaï)). Cognate with Gujarati ભેટવું (bheṭvũ), Sindhi ڀيٽَڻُ / भेटणु (bheṭaṇu), Nepali भेट्नु (bheṭnu), Oriya ଭେଟିବା (bheṭiba), Assamese ভেটা (bheta). Related to भेट (bheṭ).
