Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘥𑘲𑘚𑘜𑘹 (bhīḍaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀪𑀺𑀟𑀇 (bhiḍaï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀺𑀝𑁆 (*bhiṭ, “throng, crowd”). Compare Gujarati ભીડવું (bhīḍvũ), Hindustani بِھڑْنَا / भिड़ना (bhiṛnā), Sindhi ڀِڙَڻُ / भिड़णु, Punjabi ਭਿੜਨਾ (bhiṛnā) / بھِڑنا (bhiṛnā).
