Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘣𑘳𑘩𑘜𑘹 (phulaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀨𑀼𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀇 (phullaï), from Sanskrit फुल्लति (phullati). Related to फूल (phūl, “flower”). Cognate with Gujarati ફૂલવું (phūlvũ), Hindustani پُھولْنَا / फूलना (phūlnā), Sindhi ڦُلَڻُ / फुलणु, Punjabi ਫੁੱਲਣਾ (phullaṇā) / پھُلّݨا (phullṇā), Nepali फुल्नु (phulnu), Maithili फुलब / 𑒤𑒳𑒪𑒥, Oriya ଫୁଲିବା (phuliba), Bengali ফুলা (phula), Assamese ফুলা (phula).
