Inherited from Old Marathi पिळणें (piḷaṇeṃ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀻𑀟𑀇 (pīḍaï), 𑀧𑀻𑀮𑀇 (pīlaï), from Sanskrit पीडयति (pīḍayati). Cognate to Konkani पिळ्चे (piḷce).
