Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘲𑘜𑘹 (pīṇe), Old Marathi 𑘢𑘹𑘜𑘹 (peṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀯𑀇 (pivaï), from Sanskrit पिबति (píbati), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *píbati, from Proto-Indo-European *píbeti, late variant of *píph₃eti, reduplication of *peh₃- (“to drink”). Cognate with Gujarati પીવું (pīvũ), Hindi पीना (pīnā), Mewari पीणो (pīṇo), Nepali पिउनु (piunu), Bhojpuri पिअल (pial), Assamese পিয়া (pia).
