From Old Marathi 𑘢𑘲𑘎𑘜𑘹 (pīkaṇe), from Sanskrit पचति (pácati, “to cook; to ripen; to mature”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *páćati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *páčati, from Proto-Indo-European *pékʷeti (“to cook”). Compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀓𑁆𑀓 (pikka, “cooked, ripe”), Gujarati પાકવું (pākvũ), Hindi पकना (paknā), Punjabi ਪੱਕਣਾ (pakṇā) / پکّنا (pknnā), Nepali पाक्नु (pāknu), Assamese পকা (poka). Related to पीक (pīk), पिके (pike).
