From Proto-Indo-Aryan *parut, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *parut, from Proto-Indo-European *péruti (“last year”, literally “on the other side of the year”), from *per (“across”) + *ut(i), locative singular form of *wet- (“year”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πέρυσι (pérusi, “last year”), Old Armenian հերու (heru, “last year”), Lithuanian pernai (“last year”) and Old Norse fjǫrð (“last year”).
