Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘜𑘿𑘮𑘹 (paṇhe), 𑘢𑘡𑘿𑘮𑘹 (panhe) (compare Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀡 (pāṇa), Sanskrit पान (pā́na), पानक (pānaka)). Compare Oriya ପଣା (pôṇa, “solution of sugar”), Bengali পানা (pana, “a sweet cold drink”).
