From Proto-Indo-Aryan *názdiṣṭʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *názdištʰas (“nearest”), from Proto-Indo-European *nesd-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬰𐬛𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬀 (nazdišta, “nearest”), Persian نزدیک (nazdīk).
