Borrowed from Persian نشان‎ (nešân), from an earlier نیشان‎ (nišân), from Middle Persian [script needed] (nyšʾn' /nīšān/). Compare Gujarati નિશાન (niśān), Kannada ನಿಶಾನೆ (niśāne), Hindi निशान (niśān), Punjabi ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ (niśān) / نشان‎ (nśān), Bengali নিশান (niśan).
