Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰanu- (“fir”), see also Proto-Germanic *dannǭ (“fir, pine”), Albanian thanë (“cranberry bush”), Avestan 𐬚𐬀𐬥𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬭𐬆 (θanuuarə, “bow”), Hittite 𒄑𒋫𒈾𒀀𒌑 (GIŠta-na-a-ú /tanau/, “fir”), and perhaps Ancient Greek θάμνος (thámnos, “thicket”).[1]
