From Proto-Indo-Aryan *dáwṣas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáwšas, from Proto-Indo-European *dew- (“to fail, to lag, to be behind”). Cognate with English tire and Ancient Greek δεύομαι (deúomai, “to lack”).
