From Proto-Indo-Iranian *tāpáyati, from Proto-Indo-European top-éye-ti (“to heat”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬁𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (tāpaiieiti). Also related to तपति (tapati) and तपस् (tapas).
