From Old Marathi 𑘝𑘢𑘜𑘹 (tapaṇe), 𑘝𑘰𑘢𑘜𑘹 (tāpaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀢𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀇 (tappaï), from Sanskrit तप्यति (tápyati). Cognate with Gujarati તાપવું (tāpvũ), Hindi तापना (tāpnā), Sindhi تَپَڻُ / तपणु, Punjabi ਤਪਣਾ (tapṇā) / تپنا (tpnā) , Sinhalese තපිනවා (tapinavā).
