Etymology
Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘕𑘮𑘰𑘩𑘹𑘽 (jahāleṁ), 𑘕𑘰𑘮𑘩𑘹𑘽 (jāhaleṁ)[1], from 𑘕𑘰𑘩𑘹𑘽 (jāleṁ) + *𑘁𑘮𑘩𑘹𑘽 (*āhaleṁ)[2].
- 𑘕𑘰𑘩𑘹𑘽 (jāleṁ) from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀬 (jāya) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-lla-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit जात (jātá)[2], from Proto-Indo-Aryan *źaHtás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́aHtás, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥h₁tós.
- *𑘁𑘮𑘩𑘹𑘽 (*āhaleṁ) is the regularly inflected perfective of the defective verb 𑘁𑘮𑘜𑘹 (āhaṇe)[2][3].
Cognate with Sindhi ڄائو / ॼाओ, Konkani जाले (j̈āle, perfective of जाव्चे (j̈āvce, “to happen”)), जाल्ले (j̈ālle, “happened, done”, adjective).
