Etymology
Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘕𑘢𑘜𑘹 (japaṇe, “to repeat; to be watchful; to take care of”), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀚𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀇 (jappaï), 𑀚𑀁𑀧𑀇 (jaṃpaï), from Sanskrit जल्पति (jálpati)[1]. Compare Gujarati જપવું (japvũ), Hindustani جَپْنَا / जपना (japnā), Sindhi جَپَڻُ / जपणु, Punjabi ਜਪਣਾ (japṇā) / جَپݨا (japṇā), Nepali जप्नु (japnu), Maithili जपब / 𑒖𑒣𑒥.
