From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ánati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵánati, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁-e-ti, from *ǵenh₁- (“to give birth”). Cognate with Persian زادن (zâdan).
