From Proto-Indo-Aryan *gā́wṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gā́wš, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷṓws. Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊 (gao), Ancient Greek βοῦς (boûs), Latin bōs, Old English cū (whence English cow).
