From Old Marathi 𑘐𑘰𑘽𑘙𑘲 (gāṁṭhī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀞𑀺 (gaṃṭhi), from Sanskrit ग्रन्थि (granthí). Cognate with Gujarati ગાંઠ (gā̃ṭh), Hindi गांठ (gāṇṭh), Assamese গাঁঠি (gãthi), Sinhalese ගැටය (gæṭaya).
