Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘏𑘹𑘯𑘜𑘹 (kheḷaṇe), 𑘎𑘿𑘬𑘹𑘯𑘜𑘹 (kṣeḷaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀔𑁂𑀮𑀇 (khelaï), from Sanskrit खेलति (khelati). Cognate to Konkani खेळ्चे (kheḷce), Gujarati ખેલવું (khelvũ), Hindi खेलना (khelnā), Nepali खेल्नु (khelnu), Bengali খেলা (khela), Assamese খেলা (khela).
