Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀓𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀯 (kacchava), from Sanskrit कच्छप (kacchapa), from earlier कश्यप (kaśyápa). Cognate with Konkani कांसव (kā̃sav), Gujarati કાચબો (kācbo), Hindustani कछुआ (kachuā) / کَچُھوا, Assamese কাছ (kaso).
