Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *kárṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *káršati, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷéls-e-ti, from *kʷéls- (“to pull, drag”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌‎ (karšaiti), Persian کشیدن‎ (kešidan). Compare also Old Armenian քարշ (kʿarš), an Iranian borrowing.
