Borrowed from Kannada ಒಕ್ಕರಿಸುವುದು (okkarisuvudu, “to gag, retch, dry heave”) probably ultimately of onomatopoeic origin. Compare Old Marathi उकणे (ukaṇe) and Marathi ओकणे (okṇe), borrowings from Kannada.
