Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hŕ̥śyas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hŕ̥ĉyas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ĺ̥-ḱ-yos, from *h₁el- (“deer, horned wild animal”). Cognate with Russian лось (losʹ, “elk”), Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos, “red deer”), Old English eolh (whence English elk).

निमेघमानो मघवन्दिवेदिव ओजिष्ठं दधिषे सहः ॥- ṛśyo na tṛṣyannavapānamā gahi pibā somaṃ vaśām̐ anu .
nimeghamāno maghavandivediva ojiṣṭhaṃ dadhiṣe sahaḥ . - Come like a thirsty antelope to the drinking-place: drink Soma to thy heart's desire.

Usage notes
Although the form ऋष्य (ṛṣya) is more popular due to its use in Classical Sanskrit literature, Monier-Williams states that the word was originally ऋश्य (ṛ́śya). The original form is also attested in the Rig Veda.
