From the locative singular of ऋत (ṛtá, “met with, afflicted by”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁- (“to separate”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐρῆμος (erêmos, “lonesome, solitary”), Latin rarus (“far apart, rare”) (English rare) and Lithuanian irti (“to fall apart”).
