From Proto-Indo-Aryan *uśíkṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *uĉíkš (“sacrificing priest”); see there for more. Cognate with Old Avestan 𐬎𐬯𐬌𐬑𐬱 (usixš, “non-Zoroastrian sacrificer”).
