Ultimately from an eastern source; compare Middle Persian blnj, Sanskrit व्रीहि (vrīhí). Also compare Arabic رُزّ (ruzz). The spelling ܐܘܪܘܙܐ (ʾwrwzʾ) is from Ancient Greek ὄρυζα (óruza).
