Possibly from Middle Persian سندیان (sindiyân, “kind of oak”), otherwise from the semitic root ܣ-ܢ-ܕ (s-n-d) related to firmness and staying up. Compare Arabic سِندِيَان (sindiyān), Akkadian 𒄑𒋛𒅔𒁕𒀀 (sindu, “a tree”).
