From the root ܘ-ܪ-ܩ‎ (w-r-q), from Proto-Semitic *waraq- (“leaf”). Compare Arabic يَرَقَان‎ (yaraqān), يَرْقَان‎ (yarqān) and Hebrew יַרְקָן‎ (yarqān), יַרְקוֹן‎ (yarqôn).
