From the root ܚ-ܕ-ܬ‎ (ḳ-d-t) related to renewing, from Aramaic חֲדַת‎ (ḥăḏaṯ), from Proto-West Semitic *ḥadaṯ-; compare Arabic حَدُثَ‎‎ (ḥaduṯa) and Hebrew חִדֵּשׁ‎ (ḥidēš)‎.
