From the root ܙ-ܓ-ܓ (z-ɡ-ɡ) related to ringing, from ܙܓܐ (zaggā(ʾ), “bell”), from the earlier uncontracted form ܙܢܓܐ (zangā(ʾ)), from Middle Persian [script needed] (zang). Compare Persian زنگ (zang).
