From Akkadian 𒆜𒄷 (KASKAL^MUŠEN /uršānu/, “a kind of pigeon”), itself borrowed from Sumerian 𒆜𒄷 (KASKAL^MUŠEN /irsaĝ/, “pigeon”). Compare Jewish Babylonian Aramaic וַרְשָׁאנָא‎ (waršānā), אוּרְשָׁנָא‎ (uršānā), and Arabic وَرَشان‎ (warašān).
