ܐܒ
Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
Etymology 1
From Aramaic אָב (ʾāḇ), from Akkadian 𒌚𒉈 (Abum); also borrowed into Arabic آب (ʾāb) and Hebrew אָב ('áv)
Pronunciation
- (standard) IPA(key): [ɑbː]
Proper noun
ܐܵܒ • (āb) m
- August (eight month of the Gregorian calendar of thirty-one days, following July and preceding September)
- The fifth month of the Assyrian calendar.
- Av (eleventh month of the Jewish calendar of thirty days, following Tammuz and preceding Elul)
Usage notes
- ܐܵܒ (āb) is the most common name for the month of August alongside ܛܲܒܵܚ (ṭabbāḥ), the two fairly being interchangeable. However there is a push for ܛܲܒܵܚ (ṭabbāḥ) to be used more often, due to August 7 being ܝܵܘܡܵܐ ܕܣܵܗܕܹ̈ܐ ܐܵܫܘܿܪ̈ܵܝܹܐ (yāwmā d-sāhdē āšorāyē, “Assyrian Martyrs Day”)
