From a derivation of Proto-Turkic *yal- (“name of different types of grass”).[1] Cognate with Kyrgyz жалбыз (jalbız, “mint”), Uzbek yalpiz (“mint”), Kazakh жалбыз (jalbız, “mint”), etc.
