Etymology
Related to Chorasmian čābātān (“thick boots”). Possibly loaned to Romance words such as Spanish zapato, French savate, Italian ciabatta, etc.; possibly related to Turkish zabata and Tatar čabata (“overshoes”), which are from Turkish çapıt, çaput (“patchwork, tatters”), from Old Turkic čapmaq (čapmaq, “to slap on”).
