From Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to move; to turn (around)”). Indo-Iranian cognates include Ossetian цæрын (cæryn, “to live”), Pashto څرېدل (śaredal, “to pasture, graze”) and Sanskrit चरति (cárati, “he moves”). Akin to Ancient Greek πέλω (pélō), Latin colō, Old Church Slavonic коло (kolo, “wheel”).
