چالش
Persian
Etymology
Deverbal noun of the verb چالیدن (čâlidan), چلیدن (čalidan, “to walk proudly, saunter”), and also possibly related to چلیدن (čalidan), چلاندن (čalândan, “to put pressure”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (“to turn”). Related to Persian چالاک (čâlâk, “fast, agile, strong, able”), Sanskrit चरति (carati, “to move oneself, to be engaged in”), and Avestan 𐬗𐬀𐬭𐬁𐬥𐬍 (carānī, “I move, I approach”). Unrelated to Turkish çalışmak (“to work, study”), though they may have influenced each other.
