Etymology
From Middle Persian [script needed] (MKḆLWNtn' /padīriftan/), [script needed] (MKḆLWN /padīr-/), from an Proto-Iranian compound of *pati- and *grab- (“to grab”), the latter from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ-, whence also Sanskrit गृह्णाति (gṛhṇāti, “he seizes”), गृभ्णाति (gṛbhṇāti), and Proto-Germanic *grab- (whence English grab).
