Etymology

Formally possibly in part from Arabic هُنَّ‎ (hunna, “they [feminine]”), but the use as a masculine or gender-neutral plural is based on Aramaic, including Classical Syriac ܗܢܘܢ‎ (hennon).

   Kilmā bšūfun, hinni ʿam yaḥkū b-nafs il-mawḍūʿ.
