Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *halak-, forming the root ه ل ك (h-l-k). Cognate with Hebrew הָלַךְ (to go; to go on; to go away).

هَلَكَ (halaka) I, non-past يَهْلِكُ or يَهْلَكُ‎ (yahliku or yahlaku) (intransitive)

  1. to perish, to die, to be destroyed, to expire, to succumb

    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 4:176:
      إِنِ ٱمْرُؤٌ هَلَكَ لَيْسَ لَهُ وَلَدٌ وَلَهُ أُخْتٌ فَلَهَا نِصْفُ مَا تَرَكَ
      ʾini mruʾun halaka laysa lahu waladun walahu ʾuḵtun falahā niṣfu mā taraka
      If a man deceases and he has no offspring and has a sister, she shall have half of what he has left.
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 8:42:
      إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْ ۚ وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَاخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِي الْمِيعَادِ ۙ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَيَّ عَن بَيِّنَةٍ ۗ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
      And you were in the lower course and they were in the farther course, with the riders below you. If you had appointed it, you would have differed on its appointment! But it was so, that Allah may carry out a thing that was to be done: that whoever perishes may perish with the truth and that whoever lives may live with the truth. Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 40:34:
      وَلَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ يُوسُفُ مِن قَبْلُ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَمَا زِلْتُمْ فِي شَكٍّ مِّمَّا جَاءَكُم بِهِ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا هَلَكَ قُلْتُمْ لَن يَبْعَثَ اللّٰهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ رَسُولًا
      walaqad jāʾakum yūsufu min qablu bi-l-bayyināti famā ziltum fī šakkin mmimmā jāʾakum bihi ḥattā ʾiḏā halaka qultum lan yabʿaṯa llāhu min baʿdihi rasūlan
      And Joseph came to you before with evident truths, and you were still in doubt of what he came to you with till he expired, and then you said, "There will be no other prophet from Allah after him."
