Etymology

Plural of معروض (maruz), from Arabic مَعْرُوض‎ (maʿrūḍ), passive participle of عَرَضَ (ʿaraḍa, to appear, happen, show). By the end of Ottoman times the singular and plural had diverged in meaning.
