Etymology

From Arabic ما عاد (mā ʿāda), literally: “he hasn’t returned [to doing something]”. While the construction is verbal in standard Arabic, requiring conjugation of the verb عاد (ʿāda) according to the subject of the phrase, it has become adverbial in North Levantine Arabic and is generally uninflected. Compare to this the Hebrew adverb עוד (ʿōd, still).
