Etymology

From Prakrit 𑀮𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀺𑀅 (laḍḍia, “caressing”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-lla-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), ultimately from Sanskrit लड् (laḍ, “to play”). Equivalent to لاڈ‎ (lāḍ, “affection”) +‎ -لا‎ (lā). Compare Hindi लाड़ला (lāṛlā).
