This originates as a case form of a defective noun فَوْق‎ (fawq, “location that is above”). It is declined normally when definite or in the construct state, e.g. الْفَوْقُ (al-fawqu, “the location that is above”), فَوْقُهُ (fawquhu, “his upper part”). Other forms are the adverbial accusative in the preposition فَوْقَ‎ (fawqa, “above”), the genitive in the expression مِنْ فَوْقٍ‎ (min fawqin, “from above, above”) (also with an attached pronoun, as in مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ (min fawqihim, “(from) above them”)), and the irregular expression مِنْ فَوْقُ‎ (min fawqu, “(from) above”).
