Etymology

Borrowed from Middle Persian pdʾm (padām). Also in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic פדאמא /‎ פְּדָמָא (pəḏāmā). Ultimately from Akkadian 𒌋𒌆 (/pasāmu/, to veil).

Noun

فَدَام or فِدَام (fadām or fidām) m (plural فُدُم (fudum) or فُدُوم (fudūm))

  1. a thing bound upon the mouth of something so as to filter immissions
    1. a piece of cloth bound upon the mouths by Zoroastrians in sacral contexts, a mouth-veil used by Magians so as not to pollute the sacred flame by their breath
    2. stopper, strainer, colander, put onto a pitcher (إِبْرِيق (ʾibrīq))
    3. stopper, bung, cork, put onto a container of liquid or chemicals to close it
    4. muzzle for beasts
