Etymology
Compare Central Atlas Tamazight ⴼⴰⵙ (fas)); linked to the region of the Central Atlas Mountains called ْفَازَاز (fāzāz), deriving either from a chronicled بَنُو فَازَازْ (banū fāzāz), ultimately associated with Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⴼⵣⴰ (afza, “coarse, rough, hard, rocky”). The headwear is derived from Ottoman Turkish فس (fes) coined from the Moroccan city where it was popularized, itself from Arabic فَاس (Fās).
