From Aramaic שידא (šēḏā) or Classical Syriac ܫܐܕܐ (šēḏā, “demon”), from Akkadian 𒀭𒆘 (šēdum, “a protective deity”).
For the semantic shift, compare مجنون (majnun, “mad, insane; enamored”), which is from جن (jinn, “demon”).
