Etymology

From Aramaic שילמא‎ / ܫܱܝܠܡܳܐ‎ (šayləmā), also ܫܱܝܠܳܘܡܳܐ‎ (šaylāmā), too meaning ryegrass, from the root שׁ־ל־ם‎ / ܫ-ܠ-ܡ‎ (š-l-m) related to “rest, tranquility; peace”, as it is used as a sedative in folk medicine and one rests in peace after one intakes this plant inadvertently.

     الجراح والقروح‏:‏ يطلى النابت منه مع الحنطة على القروحٍ ويذر عليها فينفع ويطلى على القوباء وقد يجعل على الجروح مع قشر الفجل ضماداً فينفع‏.‏
     أعضاء الرأس‏:‏ يسكر ويسد‏.‏
     أعضاء النفض‏:‏ إذا بخّر به أعان على الحبل خصوصاً مع سويق الشعير‏.‏‎
